2022 Devotion Day 3

The Fast (ing) That God Accepts

My first experience with fasting came at the age of twelve. My cousin Dan had been diagnosed with cancer and the future did not look good. Our grandfather, known as Pop Abbott, called a family fast. This was to be a “one day” fast. Some of the older relatives made the choice of fasting the entire day! As a growing boy I thought life revolved around FOOD! Girls had not come upon the scene yet!

My parents were supportive of me fasting one meal. I will never forget how long it seemed from breakfast (7:30am) to supper at 5:00 pm. I remember checking the clock almost every fifteen minutes – pure torture, but I didn’t die! Neither did my cousin – God healed him, and he went on to live a good life.

Because of that early experience and a knowledge of fasting from the Word, it has become a practice (though not enough) in my life. Let’s quickly look at God’s Word regarding the fast that God accepts!

“Is this not the fast which I choose, to loosen the bonds of wickedness, to undo the bands of the yoke, and to let the oppressed go free, and break every yoke?” Isaiah 58:6 NASB

In his book, The Rewards of Fasting, Mike Bickle, founder and director of the International House of Prayer (IHOP) in Kansas City, states: “We will sustain a life of fasting only by God’s grace, not by our own strength. Fasting is more than gritting our teeth as we endure it. Instead, we ask God for grace to enterinto the mystery of connecting with Him in fasting. As we embrace the voluntary weakness of fasting, we receive more spiritual strength in our walk with God. His grace multiplies to those who pursue it.”

When you fast, your motive is to connect with God. From there, watch what happens!

It’s time to fast!
